Giovanni Cassini explained the phenomenon of zodiacal light
as a faint glow that extends away from the sun, making the sun appear to flatten as it sets. In this sculpture, an elliptical form is polished into frosted glass and an elliptical form expands and contracts as the scrim behind the glass is pushed and released.
